Reintegration of Ex-Combatants:
Advanced Training Course
A one-week residential course at Overste Hof,
Landgraaf, The Netherlands.

Full board accommodation for duration of the
course is included in the cost.
Participants have to be able to commit to
attend the course in full.
This course is aimed at bringing together people
working in this field to share best practices and lessons learnt from
reintegration experiences in different parts of the world. The course will
build and enhance the skills and knowledge of participants so as to be able to
improve the quality of the work of reintegration. It will support participants
in assessing local realities and help to design, implement and coordinate
tailored reintegration efforts more effectively, ensuring that future work
measures up to IDDR standards.

Introduction to Disarmament, Demobilisation and SSR, in relation to Reintegration
Overview of Reintegration and its role within the DDR Process
Strategies and key activities for the reintegration of ex-combatants
Reintegration from a community perspective
Economic reintegration, job markets and job creation
Psycho-social factors in reintegration
Gender aspects of reintegration
Special needs of children associated with armed groups
Challenges of Youth Reintegration
Designing, Planning and Monitoring a reintegration programme
Training Methodology:
This is a very practical and interactive
course, focusing on the acquisition of relevant knowledge and skills using
presentations and a variety of cooperative learning training methodologies.
Participants are expected to bring a wealth of skills and experience with them
and to share these with the rest of the group as an integral part of the
learning process.
Certification
This
is an assessed course leading to a certificate for successful completion. This
certificate is awarded by International Alert and Transition International and
recognized by a growing number of NGOs, UN and government agencies working in
post-conflict environments. The course will follow the UN Integrated DDR
standards and also received accreditation in 2009 from the European Group on
Training.
Trainers:
The
course will be led by Irma Specht of Transition International who has over 10
years experience working on socio-economic reintegration programmes with the
ILO and as a consultant. Other trainers and resource people with experience of
different conflict regions will be brought in for particular sessions to ensure
a variety of approaches and perspectives.
Criteria for Application:
You must have:
At least two years of relevant experience in (or on) a post-conflict context
At least one year of relevant experience in DDR
Knowledge of current DDR literature
Skills and knowledge to work toward solutions
Sufficient level of English to read, write and express yourself
Previous attendance of a DDR course is an asset
