Larry Attree

Larry Attree is a specialist in small arms, armed violence and development. For TI he has researched EU policy on children and conflict from a SALW and DDR perspective, supported research on the experiences of girl combatants in Liberia, and assisted in training EU crisis management personnel on reintegration of ex-combatants. His experience includes working with Saferworld UK, the UNDP/Stability Pact South Eastern Europe Clearinghouse for Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SEESAC), and the UNDP Country Office in Papua New Guinea. As a UNDP adviser to the Government of Papua New Guinea he helped to draft a national strategy for armed violence reduction, evaluated and redesigned the UNDP’s in-country approach to crisis prevention and recovery, established pilot violence reduction initiatives and conducted media training on small arms issues. At SEESAC he developed expertise in public awareness project management, delivered trainings and disseminated multimedia guidelines to support the work of NGOs in changing attitudes to weapons and violence. He also researched the links between small arms and development, authored guidelines on SALW programmes working with children in troubled communities, and evaluated a pilot SALW awareness project. At Saferworld he also worked on supply side issues, such as management of stockpiles, defense industries in transition and export control policies. For SEESAC and Saferworld he has been involved in editing and research on a number of national surveys of small arms issues (‘SALW Surveys’), as well as research reports and guidelines on a range of other topics.
